Black-throated Lichen Spider (Pandercetes nigrogularis), female guarding egg sac on suspended dead leaf. Sarawak, Malaysia (Borneo). Hidden on the back of a suspended dead leaf, a Black-throated Lichen Spider (Pandercetes nigrogularis) stands guard over her egg sac, both she and her eggs scarcely visible against their background. Many spiders are known to use silk to hoist objects into their webs as a means of concealment. In this case, the leaf not only serves as effective camouflage, but also keeps the spider and her brood out of reach from unwanted visitors.
