Mangrove Jewel Bug (Calliphara nobilis). Sarawak, Malaysia (Borneo). Likea cache of precious stones, a resplendent pack of Mangrove Jewel Bugs shelter on the undersurface of a leaf. Although each individual bug is wel equipped to defend itself by squirting noxious chemicals, they nevertheless find more security to sleep together in large numbers. A likely explanation is that, when grouped tightly, their combined warning coloration serves as a more effective and amplified signal to ward off curious predators.
