With scarlet plumage so intense it almost appears unnatural, one would think that the male Whitehead’s Trogon (Harpactes whiteheadi) might be easy to find among its moss forest habitat. However, unlike the other Bornean trogon species, which advertise their presence with loud repeated calls, Whitehead’s rarely vocalizes and even when it does, its voice is rather demure, making it difficult to find. Found only in the cool montane forests of Borneo’s northern mountains, this is one of the island’s most prized endemic birds and is always a treat to encounter. Sabah, Malaysia (Borneo).
