Scarcely longer than an earthworm, this juvenile slug-eating snake (Pareas hamptoni) sleeps balanced on top of a fern frond. Many slug-eating snakes retain the unusual asymmetric dentition of their snail-eating ancestors, an adaptation for pulling snails out of their shells via a process known as ‘mandibular walking’.
